Bosnian Culinary Products Protected by Geographical Indications

In 2024, collaborative efforts led to a significant increase in the number of BiH’s food products with protected origin labels, enhancing both their market visibility and integration into the tourism sector.

In 2024, BiH achieved a significant milestone in preserving its culinary heritage, thanks to the collaborative efforts of USAID’s Turizam project, the Food Safety Agency of BiH (BiH FSA), and partners such as the European Union (EU), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO). With support from entity ministries of agriculture and local communities, the number of products with protected origin labels has risen from 7 to 20.

Following national registration, producers can seek protection within the EU, expanding their market reach and visibility. This progress not only safeguards traditional food production techniques but also enhances BiH’s reputation as a destination for authentic gastronomy experiences.

The BiH FSA, in partnership with USAID Turizam, is actively working to integrate these protected products into the country’s tourism value chain. As part of these efforts, an interactive map was launched on the agency’s website, offering user-friendly information about the products. Additionally, the publication Traditional Food Products of BiH and the Potential of Geographical Indications (GI) was released, showcasing products eligible for GI status and their cultural significance. These resources are helping local producers connect with consumers and build stronger brand identities for their products.

Certified products with geographical indications not only command premium market prices but also play a pivotal role in rural tourism development. Their uniqueness attracts domestic and international visitors, creating a strong synergy between food and tourism. This connection drives sustainable rural development and offers authentic tourist experiences. Protected food products are not just a source of pride but also an economic asset that can significantly boost local economies and preserve rural livelihoods.
