At a ceremony organized by the City of Mostar, the BiH Foreign Trade Chamber, the USAID Developing Sustainable Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Turizam) project, and members of the Herzegovina Wine Route celebrated the prestigious title of the European Wine City Dionisio 2024 awarded to Mostar by the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN).

Numerous domestic and international guests had the opportunity to learn more about the Herzegovina Wine Route and participate in a professional networking event, taste Herzegovinian wines, and attend the official ceremony of awarding the title of the European Wine City Dionisio 2024 at the Mostar City Hall. Partners from wine associations from Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Moldova, and Azerbaijan shared their experiences in wine tourism development with their colleagues from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The title of the European Wine City Dionisio showcases our culture and tradition, and events like these demonstrate our belonging to the European family. We are proud to host the promotion of the prestigious Recevin award and stand alongside the great European cities that have previously held the title of the European Wine City Dionisio. Such collaboration and promotion reflects our enduring commitment to the European family of cities and states. I am confident that throughout this year and all our events, we will showcase our multiculturalism, the tradition of wine production Herzegovina, as well as the promising future of the city of Mostar and Bosnia and Herzegovina,” stated the Mayor of Mostar Mario Kordić, who also organized official ceremony.

The title of the European Wine City Dionisio is not only a testament to the quality of wines produced in the Mostar area but also to Mostar’s dedication to preserving and promoting its viticultural heritage. This recognition follows Toulouse’s successful tenure as the Wine City Dionisio 2023, positioning Mostar at the heart of European viticulture and opening new avenues for cultural and economic development.

“I extend sincere congratulations to the City of Mostar on the commencement of its mandate as the European Wine City Dionisio 2024! USAID is proud to have supported you and the Herzegovina Wine Route on the journey to this title. We truly believe this is just the beginning of something very special. Something that will change the way the world sees Bosnia and Herzegovina. This recognition honors Mostar as a center of wine production and an international wine destination, instilling local pride by showcasing to the world what Mostar and Herzegovina have to offer – excellent wine, delicious food, exceptional natural beauty, and incredible people,” stated Karl Wurster, Director of the USAID BiH Economic Development Office.

This title also represents a recognition for the entire Herzegovina Wine Route, a cultural route that encompasses not only Mostar but also the cities/municipalities of Čitluk, Ljubuški, Čapljina, Stolac, and Trebinje. The Herzegovina Wine Route is a member of the Council of Europe’s cultural route Iter Vitis, which promotes some of the most prominent European wine destinations along with their unique landscapes, authentic ways of life, and cultural-historical and material heritage.

“After the Olympic city of Sarajevo, we now have the European wine city Mostar! We must be proud of this title and seize the moment for good promotion, not only of wineries and wine tourism but also of local producers, hospitality establishments, tourism agencies, including adventure tourism, and all stakeholders of the Herzegovina Wine Route. Our goal is for the Herzegovina Wine Route to become not only a European but also a global destination for all those who appreciate fine wines and the unique experience our region can offer,” said Vjekoslav Vuković, President of the BiH Foreign Trade Chamber.

“In order for it to be useful and effective for the entire Herzegovina region, it is important that the title of the European Wine City Dionisio is not just a badge to be pinned on a jacket or a slogan for a website; and that the City of Mostar uses this recognition to build international relations, as a bridge to other successful European destinations for wine tourism, to enter the club of the most desirable destinations for wine lovers. The presence of colleagues from Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Moldova, and Azerbaijan means that the echo of the values of Mostar and Herzegovina as a wine tourism destination will already have a wide impact. We should use this daily to enhance Mostar’s visibility and establish it as a top destination for attractiveness and quality, but always with special attention to long-term sustainability,” concluded President of the European Wine Cultural Route Iter Vitis Emanuela Panke.
