The Most Beuatiful Villages of Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Heartbeat of Rural Tourism
This initiative offers unique and authentic experiences to visitors, providing insight into the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. The aim is to promote and preserve traditional architecture, cultural heritage and the natural beauty of rural areas in BiH, recognizing the need to conserve these unique and authentic places and sharethemwith visitors from around the world. The Most Beautiful Villages of BiH Initiative currently includes 14 villages throughout the country, where you can find stone houses, wooden bridges, and ancient fortresses, as well as picturesque landscapes of rolling hills, crystal -clear rivers and lush forests.
Cultural tourism in the villages contributes with three elements of heritage, allowing for a greater level of cultural sustainability:
- Natural heritage of the landscape and region ecosystems,
- Tangible heritage (monuments, buildings, and archaeological sites),
- The specificity of local culture (including lifestyle, crafts, and gastronomy).
In addition to preserving heritage, these three aspects can serve as attractions for visitors seeking authentic and holistic experiences. Furthermore, traditional craftsmanship allows visitors to witness firsthand the skill permeating the creation of traditional Bosnian artifacts, such as hand-woven clothing items and wooden carvings. By communicating directly with artisans, tourists have the opportunity to learn more about the cultural significance of each craft. For this reason, the Most Beautiful Villages initiative leads to economic growth, heritage preservation, and sustainable development of rural areas.
