Why is the brochure on energy efficiency important for the hospitality sector?

Tourism represents one of the most dynamic areas of growth in the global economy, and hotels play a key role in this sector. However, the consumption of large amounts of energy in hospitality leads to high operational costs and negatively affects the environment through the use of fossil fuels, which is also a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Research shows that energy costs make up only 3-6% of a hotel’s total operational costs. Unlike other costs that are harder to control or have a tendency to increase, such as wages, depreciation, interest on loans, food costs, maintenance, marketing, and others, energy costs can be effectively controlled and gradually reduced.

On the other hand, through responsible and sustainable operations, hotels influence the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and water consumption, thereby encouraging other sustainable practices in the local community and improving the environment for both the local population and guests. In this way, all actors within the tourism value chain contribute to the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity.

Today, measures of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources are key activities of the green transition and decarbonization, which the global community committed to by signing the Paris Agreement in 2015. The goal of the agreement is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2050 compared to 1990, in order to try to halt the increasingly intense climate changes and prevent a rise in global temperature by 1.5 ºC.
