Expanding Sarajevo’s Connectivity Through New Air Routes

With support from USAID’s Turizam project, Sarajevo will strengthen its role as a regional tourism hub in 2025 with Ryanair’s new routes to Germany, France, and Spain, boosting connectivity, tourism spending, and economic growth.

With the support of USAID’s Turizam project, Sarajevo is set to strengthen its position as a regional tourism hub through the launch of new air routes by Ryanair. This achievement, driven by incentives from the Canton Sarajevo government and Visit Sarajevo, is expected to significantly enhance passenger flow and tourism spending, contributing to the city’s economic growth.

Starting in spring 2025, Ryanair will introduce four new routes from Sarajevo to Baden-Baden (Germany), Beauvais-Paris (France), Weeze (Germany), and Girona (Spain). Each route will operate twice per week, adding to Ryanair’s existing Sarajevo network, which now includes 11 destinations. Frequencies on popular routes to Bergamo, Charleroi, and Gothenburg will also increase, resulting in 27 weekly departures during the summer season.

Turizam played a pivotal role in securing government funding for these new routes by conducting in-depth research on the economic impact of increased passenger flow and tourism spending. This data-driven approach successfully convinced the Canton Sarajevo government to expand its incentive programs, ensuring the sustainability and growth of Sarajevo’s air connectivity.

The expanded air network is expected to boost tourism spending, create jobs, and elevate Sarajevo’s profile as a gateway to BiH. Increased flight frequencies and new connections to key European cities will enhance accessibility and attract a broader range of international visitors.

The introduction of these new routes underscores the importance of strategic collaboration between the government, tourism stakeholders, and airlines. By aligning efforts to expand air connectivity, Sarajevo is poised for sustained growth in its tourism sector, cementing its position as a vibrant and accessible destination
