These guidelines are intended to support private sector tourism businesses in achieving effective and consistent strategies and programs for gender equality in all their business activities. This is in line with the growing movement for gender equality and women’s empowerment in the private sector, through initiatives such as the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Reporting, and Due Diligence Legislation in Supply Chains. Numerous tourism companies in different sectors have already adopted the principles and are working to improve gender equality and empower women in the workplace, on the market, and in the community. In 2021, for example, nearly 6,000 companies in 141 countries have committed to implementing the principles. However, there are still many more opportunities and space for companies to strengthen gender-based policies in their operations.
In order to implement a gender-based policy in practice, all companies can follow four key steps:
- Secure high level support for gender equality and commit to the principles (Women’s Empowerment Principles)
- Assess current progress on gender equality
- Review current progress in thematic areas for Women in Tourism
- Develop an Action Plan for Gender-Inclusive Tourism
