By registering the traditional products, Krajina omač and trahana, in the Registry, it will enable the certification of existing and new producers of traditional food, thereby enriching the tourist offer of Bosnia and Herzegovina and promoting the recognition of traditional specialties.

The widely renowned bravery and courage of the Krajina people, along with the history and culture of this region, interwoven with various customs and traditions, have been carefully passed down to future generations for centuries. The best evidence of this is found in the traditional dishes of the Krajina region, among the most famous of which are Krajina trahana and Krajina omač. These are two types of pasta characterized by their traditional recipes and production methods in the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically in the area of the Una-Sana Canton. USAID, through the Sustainable Tourism Development Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, provided technical support in the registration process of these two products, making them the first two to receive the label of Guaranteed Traditional Specialty.

“Decades of oral and written recipes of our Krajina people have finally been recognized by being included in the Registry of Guaranteed Traditional Specialties. This way, we have the opportunity to further promote the rich Krajina cuisine and tourist offer while preserving our cultural heritage. I believe that this activity will provide recognition to the producers and preserve the authentic character of these specialties. Within the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, we are committed to supporting our producers through the certification of production, which will contribute to their better positioning in the market,” said Kemal Hrnjić, the Federal Minister of Agriculture, Water Management, and Forestry.

“This label has multiple significances, both for the producers of traditional food and for the tourism sector in the Unsko-Sanski Canton. Moreover, this label also represents the Unsko-Sanski Canton (USK) and beyond, as part of the tourism brand of the destination and the gastronomic offer of USK,” explained Professor Makić from the Faculty of Biotechnology at the University of Bihać.

The U.S. Government actively supports conservation and promotion of traditional products which represent the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina!
