With the start of the new school year in Canton Sarajevo, all students enrolled in the cooking program in the Secondary hospitality and tourism school and the Secondary Center Hadžići started attending classes in line with the modernized curriculum and program for cooks, whose development was initiated and supported by the USAID Developing Sustainable Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Turizam).
USAID Turizam has joined efforts with GIZ’s project on Technical and Vocational Education in BiH and the Ministry of Education Canton Sarajevo to support the modernization of secondary vocational education for Cooks in two pilot schools: the School for Tourism and Hospitality and the Secondary School Center Hadžići. Also included in this process were experienced and eminent education and industry professionals, who used the existing Occupation Standard for Cooks as a foundation for further curricular modernization.
“The submitted curriculum for the occupation of Cooks can be used in future as a template for transforming curriculum in vocational and technical schools as part of the curricular reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
The Institute for Development of Pre-University Education
The Institute for Development of Pre-University Education in Sarajevo evaluated this program as one based on the dual education concept, which ensures that each student will be able to meet the needs of modern hospitality, cuisine, and tourism in the future. Moreover, the program will ensure a results-based methodological approach centered on learning outcomes and quality preparation of students for the labor market through practical work.
In addition to producing an exceptional tourism experience, modern and high-quality education will result in continual work-force development. USAID Turizam perceives this revised curriculum as a substan-tial advantage to the enhancement of the community’s capacity and will thus continue to pave the way for future development opportunities.
