Mostar – The European Wine City Dionisio 2024!
Mostar has long been recognized as a city rich in cultural and historical heritage, attracting the attention of 100,000 thousand tourists with its beauty for years. However, what is perhaps less known to the public is how the cultural-historical heritage and natural beauties complement the rich wine offerings, opening a new perspective niche of tourism – wine tourism.
This award is the latest in a series of awards that Herzegovinian winemakers and Herzegovina, as a winemaking region, have won in the recent period, including the membership of the Herzegovina Wine Route in the Cultural Route of the Council of Europe Iter Vitis, the award “Best Iter Vitis Wine City” for the City of Mostar, “Best Sustainable Destination for Wine Tourism” for the City of Trebinje, “Best Practice in Enhancing Cultural-Historical Heritage and Wine” for the Tvrdoš Monastery, and 39 medals for Herzegovinian wines at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023, the world’s most prestigious wine evaluation.
“This is an extraordinary recognition for our city and all wine enthusiasts in our region. The Recevin Dionisio City of Wine for 2024 represents an exceptional opportunity to promote the Herzegovina Wine Route and its winemakers and will encourage the development of tourism and economy in our city. This is an opportunity for all of us to show what Mostar and Herzegovina can offer to the world!”, said the Mayor of the City of Mostar, Dr. Mario Kordić.
Through a more active presence and visibility of Bosnian-Herzegovinian viticulture and wine tourism in European circles, invitations for representatives of the Herzegovina Wine Route and viticultural cities to various wine events in Europe have become more frequent. The delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toulouse also participates in marking the European City of Wine and the Annual Meeting of Iter Vitis, during which a presentation of the Herzegovina Wine Route will be held. In addition to the City of Mostar, the delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina includes representatives of the Foreign Trade Chamber, which, in cooperation with local communities, manages the Herzegovina Wine Route, and the USAID Tourism project, which provides significant support to its development.
“We are proud of the City of Mostar and congratulate them on the prestigious title – European City of Wine for 2024! This recognition further emphasizes the significance of Herzegovina in the world of wine tourism. The Herzegovina Wine Route offers a unique and rich experience for wine lovers, allowing them to enjoy the excellent tastes of our locally produced wines while exploring the unique cultural heritage of Herzegovina. This opportunity also represents a significant step towards promoting our wines and winemakers at an international level. The Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina remains committed to supporting winemakers and wineries and continues to develop the Herzegovina Wine Route as one of the leading destinations for wine tourism.” said the Vice President of the Foreign Trade Chamber, Dr. Vjekoslav Vuković..
From Ljubuški and Čitluk in western Herzegovina, through Mostar, Čapljina, and Stolac in the central part, to Trebinje in the southeast, wine producers of the Herzegovina Wine Route have gained international recognition through indigenous varieties of wines like žilavka, blatina, vranac, and trnjak. Wineries are the most visible part of the Herzegovina Wine Route, but it also includes many natural attractions, a rich cultural heritage, gastronomic offerings, and a unique culture of hospitality.
