The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations collaborated on the creation of the study “Mountain Tourism – Towards a More Sustainable Path” (UNWTO).

The crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted new kinds of travel, as well as the realization that society is seeking new methods to reconnect with environment, local customs and cultures, outdoor activities, and places where individuals may enjoy themselves without crowds. This international publication compiles world trends in mountain tourism in the post-Covid age and argues that the current crisis is a chance to define new products and strategies for the sustainable growth of mountain tourism.

The best practices of countries from various regions of the globe are offered as a reference for other nations to embrace fresh views for the recovery and promotion of sustainable mountain tourism. In order to revitalize services and goods, the aforementioned sustainable development aspects represent diverse socioeconomic potential in the domains of job growth, sustainable production and consumption, and the protection of natural and cultural resources.

Among the numerous potentials of mountain tourism, gastronomy tourism, local community promotion, spiritual tourism, wellness tourism, rural tourism, and agrotourism stand out. In light of this, USAID Tourism recognizes this publication as a direct contribution to identifying ways to recover tourism in mountain regions, which includes the well-being of the local population and a greater awareness of the importance of preserving natural beauty, rich heritage, and mountain landscapes.
