About the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC®)
GSTC manages the GSTC criteria, global standards for sustainable travel and tourism, and provides international accreditation for certification bodies for sustainable tourism.
There are three sets of GSTC criteria:
- Destination criteria
- Industry criteria for hotels and tour operators
- MICE criteria for locations, event organizers, and exhibitions
These criteria are the result of a worldwide effort to develop a common language about sustainability in tourism. They are organized into four pillars: (A) Sustainable Management; (B) Social Impacts; (C) Cultural Impacts; and (D) Environmental Impacts. Given that each tourist destination has its own culture, environment, customs, and laws, the criteria are designed to adapt to local conditions and can be supplemented with additional criteria for specific places and activities.
The GSTC criteria form the basis for accreditation of certification bodies that certify hotels/accommodations, tour operators/transport providers, and destinations as places that have adopted sustainability policies and practices. GSTC does not directly certify products or services; rather, it provides an accreditation program for certifying certification bodies.
