Traditional food products of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the potential of GEO labels
The book entitled “Traditional food products of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the potential of geographical indication (GI)” is the result of the project Strengthening the Administrative System for the Management and Support of Sustainable GI in Bosnia and Herzegovina, supported by the Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO for Europe and Central Asia with the coordination of the FAO National Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the USAID’s Developing Sustainable Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Turizam).
Why is this book of particular importance for rural development in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a country located in the heart of Europe, is characterized by its geographical location, diverse natural and climate conditions, and rich culture and tradition. For this reason, there is a great potential for the protection of traditional products with GI. Following the growing trend of consumer expectations and demands for food and agricultural products that have a label of certain quality, especially quality related to origin, tradition, knowledge and skills, Bosnia and Herzegovina should use all available resources to utilize the potential of current products.
About the content of the book
The edition of this book contains a clear overview of the data, a detailed description of the products, as well as an insight into their distribution by category and geographical area of production/processing. The publication is intended at all competent authorities and policy makers, with the aim of strengthening the protection system and raising the value of agricultural and food products whose quality stems from their geographical origin.
The book of traditional products with the potential of GI in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be utilized further in the work of relevant institutions to support rural development and rural tourism; it enables the addition of supportive programs for employment in rural areas; the promotion of regions; and the preparation of registration documentation for the protection of products with geographical indications of origin in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A special contribution stands out in areas where the agricultural sector has a greater economic impact, in remote areas, and in areas with difficult economic conditions.
The protection and promotion of products with a GI can contribute in the long term to the rural development of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to the diversification of food products and greater recognition among consumers.
