The Glamoč leather moccasin, a true testament to the cherished heritage of Glamoč region, has achieved the prestigious status of protected geographical indications. With the support of a USAID Developing Sustainable Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Turizam) grant funds and technical assistance, it has been officially registered at the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This accomplishment was celebrated during an immersive workshop, which included representatived of BiH tour operators and media, a highlight of the transformative “Glamoč Leather Moccasin (Carbantinae) as a Touristic Signature of Bosnia and Herzegovina” project. The recognition it has garnered not only brings increased visibility but also paves the way for meaningful community connections and remarkable opportunities for tourism development, already manifested in the increased interest of local authorities in expanding this initiative. Geographical indications play a pivotal role in nurturing rural tourism, often overlooked in the tapestry of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s vast offerings. They serve as catalysts for elevating quality standards and generating sustainable income.
This milestone achievement stands as a shining example of Glamoč’s unwavering commitment to preserving its time-honored traditions and exquisite craftsmanship. Moreover, it breathes new life into the local communities, opening doors to promising economic prospects while fortifying the vibrant tourism sector of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Miroslav Marić, expert associate for international trademarks from the Institute for Intellectual Property of Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized the importance of geographical indications for the development of rural tourism. On this occasion, he stated: “Geographical indications affect the de-velopment of rural areas, which is very neglected in Bosnia and Her-zegovina. Of course, they also contribute to the increase of quality in rural areas and bring profit to the families living in those areas.”
This accomplishment pays special homage to the ongoing efforts aimed at increasing the exposure of local communities’ richness, thus promoting overall tourism growth in BiH.
